Epoxy flooring systems

Author: Aleksandra Petrovska

Epoxy flooring systems are widely accepted as a floor finishing solution. They have excellent adhesion to concrete substrates, high compressive strength and wear-and-tear resistance. Epoxy floor systems are resistant to acids, bases, solvents and petroleum products and they are nontoxic when bonded. Since they are monolithic, they fully comply with the required standards of the HACCP system. They are stable at a wide range of temperatures from – 40°С to +70°С.

Epoxy floor systems are widely used as a floor finish in: warehouses, garages, car parks, heavy industry and light industry production plants, hospitals, kitchens, cold storage rooms, laboratories, schools, shopping centres, sports centres, auto repair shops, computer centres and other facilities. The different solutions available for their processing provide an opportunity for application in buildings where the floors are part of the architectural design of the space.

For proper installation of epoxy flooring: First of all, the concrete substrate should be of high-quality. It must be at least 28 days old and the hydration process should be finished. It should have a minimum strength of MB30 and a maximum moisture content of 5%. The substrate should be flat, with smooth float finish, without any segregation or laitance and it should be provided with a good waterproofing system – protected against capillary penetration of moisture from the lower side. The optimal temperature of the substrate during application ranges between +10°С and +30°С.

As part of its product range, ADING offers several established epoxy flooring systems:

ADINGPOKS 1B EKO

Two-component, solvent-free epoxy resin-based coating with excellent adhesion to various types of substrates (concrete, cement mortar or steel), high abrasion resistance and resistance to bacteria, easy to apply and maintain. It is available in various colours from the colour chart.

Method of Application::ADINGPOKS 1P EKO, 1P or 1PV should be applied as a pre-coat on the substrate that is to be treated. It is applied with a woollen roller by rubbing the material into the substrate. The movement joints in the concrete substrates should be filled with the epoxy sealant ADINGPOKS-K. The material is prepared by stirring the A-component for 2-3 minutes by using an electric mixer at slow speed and then adding the B-component. They should be mixed until obtaining a completely uniform mixture. Then the mixture is applied on the substrate in a uniform layer by using a rubber trowel and it is spread by using a short-haired paint roller. The second layer of ADINGPOKS 1B EKO should be applied after the first layer has fully bonded, that is 24 hours after the application, at a temperature between 10°С and 30°С. It is recommended that the material should be applied in at least two layers.

ADINGPOKS 2 EKO

Two-component, solvent-free, self-levelling, epoxy resin-based system for floor surfaces. Depending on the purpose, the required floor slip resistance and the loading, the system can be applied in several different variants. It has excellent adhesion to various types of substrate, good resistance to thinned acids, salt solutions and mineral oils and it is easy to apply and maintain. It is available in various colours from the colour chart.

Method of Application: The previously prepared substrate should be primed with ADINGPOKS-1P EKO, 1P or 1PV by rubbing the primer into the substrate with a woollen paint roller. Then A-component should be stirred for 2-3 minutes by using an electric mixer at slow speed. Afterwards, B-component should be added and they should be mixed together until obtaining a completely uniform mixture. In order to obtain a thicker floor, increase its abrasion resistance and improve its physical and mechanical resistance, it is recommended to add ADINGPOKS 2 EKO C-component to the mixture of ADINGPOKS 2 EKO (A+B). The quantity of the material that is to be mixed should be in compliance with the workability period of that material. The material is applied by using a notched trowel. Afterwards, it should be treated with a bristle roller in order to eliminate the air bubbles inside the epoxy layer. The treatment of the surface with the bristle roller should take place 15-20 minutes after the application of the material.

ADINGSTATIK EKO

Three-component, electro-conductive, epoxy floor system which is installed in premises where static electricity may occur with the purpose of earthing the electricity. The product is used for flooring in electronic equipment manufacturing plants, computer centres, operating theatres of hospitals, electronic laboratories, manufacturing plants and warehouses for paints, varnishes and solvents, manufacturing plants and warehouses for explosives and easily flammable materials, etc. It has excellent adhesion to various types of substrate, high abrasion resistance and resistance to bacteria and it is easy to apply and maintain.

Method of Application:

The service life of these epoxy resin-based floor systems depends on the exploitation and maintenance of the floor. The floor can usually be cleaned by using a machine with rotating soft brushes and water-diluted detergents or with warm water up to 30°С.
